Dennis Landry – Concentration/Sing My Song

Picked this one up in a Super Flea dig.  I know, I know…  Where is this place?  Super Flea is alive and well.  Sadly the record booth has vanished.  When I first heard the news I thought a fellow vinyl junkie was playing some sort of sick joke or diversion tactic on me. Seriously, when you have an addiction sometimes you get paranoid.  My next trip back to my hometown after the news I went to see for myself.  I almost wish I wouldn’t have.  The record booth was gone.  They split the big booth up and in it’s place were new vendors selling toiletries, airbrushed shirts, bootleg DVD’s and beaded jewelry.  I wish this wasn’t my last memory of the vinyl paradise.  The paranoia subsided and was replaced with sadness and longing.  Every time I play a record pulled from Super Flea’s massive selection a part of me is transported back there.  Out of the unorganized mess of 45’s stashed in U-Haul boxes under the LP cases came this record, one of my first funky soul digs.  There’s no marking for side A, B, 1 or 2.  I vividly remember playing, Concentration, first.  The intro is a bass driven synth line with a lighter synth on top.  A horn stab breaks through then the drums and funky guitar riff burst in followed by strings and female background vocals.  The instruments take turns moving you until the very end.  Flipping it over to, Sing My Song, it’s immediately evident they’re the same track but this time with Dennis on lead vocals.  His inflection really completes the track.  Writing this review made me curious.  I checked eBay and Discogs to find this record is currently going for $35.  A lot more than the 33¢ I paid at Super Flea.  If funky soul records are you thing check it out.
